Andrew Start (he/him/his) is a queer yogi, artist and arts educator. He is a 2019 graduate of the 200 hour YTT at Yoga Refuge and has practiced yoga since 1998. New to PDX via NYC he is continuing his studies with Todd Jackson among others. He brings an awareness and exploration of anatomy from a multitude of perspectives: dancer, yogi, actor – and an integration of the physical and energetic bodies (felt sense). He aims to make his classes safe spaces for people who have experienced stigma and/or rejection because of who they are, how they look or what they do. An attention to grounding and belonging is essential to his work as well as cultivating the freedom to experience emotion and thought as contained within the body and perhaps detached from dominant cultural narratives. Andrew practices and is influenced by Hatha, Restorative, Yin, Flow and formerly Ashtanga and Hot yoga; and as an artist by the techniques of Uta Hagen, Sanford Meisner, Michael Chekhov, Katherine Fitzmaurice and the Knight-Thompson approach to speech. He earned an MFA from Rutgers University and is a member of Actors’ Equity Association.
