Wild Hearts: What's up in your practice right now? What are your current focuses in teaching?
Janelle: This is my first full spring in Portland and I am feeling it! The energy is active and wild, constantly pushing up life! In my practice, both on and off the mat, as a mother of a toddler and a practitioner, I work on tempering the wildness with a fierce and quick connection to my breath and my ability to drop in to the present moment, to feel the excitement of life and to stay rooted and grounded. This allows me the space to move forward with the fullest expression of my asana and a loving non reactive response to the moment. My asana practice has been active and strengthening, working on variations of poses like handstand and pinchamaryasana (fore-arm stand) working in deep alignment and on drawing the body inward. I remind myself to commit first to the breath, to inform the next movement. The more quickly I can ground and settle myself, the more dynamic and open my asana becomes.
Janelle teaches two classes weekly. Sign up for class here, or just drop in!
